Online registration for the conference starts in February 2027.

Travel Grants

The ESEH and the local organisers will make available a limited number of travel grants (of € 250.– or € 500.–) for ESEH members delivering papers or presenting posters (as main authors) who would otherwise be unable to attend without external support. These grants are intended primarily for graduate students, independent scholars, and participants from low-income countries. Travel grant applications will open after acceptance notifications.

Excursions

We offer three types of tours and excursions that accompany the ESEH 2027 conference: short walking tours in the city of Salzburg (nos. I and IIa-g), full day regional excursions and half day regional excursions. All these side events must be booked in advance when registering for the conference. You may also sign up for multiple excursions/walks. Please note that access to some of the events (nos. IIa – g and III – IX) is not included in the conference fee. Please note that once booked (and paid for), cancellation is not possible in case of the paid excursions. If trips are cancelled because of weather conditions or other reasons, all registered participants will be notified ahead of time, and any paid fees will be fully refunded. Water History Walking Tour

This walking tour (offered on two dates) traces the long-term history of the city’s water supply in Salzburg. The tour is led by certified city guides in collaboration with the local organising committee. It explores topics such as various pre-modern solutions for supplying the city with drinking water, water-related infrastructure, the issue of wastewater disposal, and the relationship between the river and the city up to more recent times. The tour lasts about two hours. The walk on Saturday is ideally combined with the Almkanal-tour (see no. 2).

Participation is free, but advance registration is required.

Exploring the Medieval Almkanal

This guided tour (daily) offers a guided walk through the medieval water tunnel of the “Almkanal”, which supplied the city centre with process and drinking water. The tour lasts about one hour, the necessary rubber boots will be provided by us.

Berchtesgaden National Park
III

This full-day excursion to Berchtesgaden National Park (Germany) takes you to the Klausbach Valley and the Hirschbichl Pass in the core zone of the national park. The focus of this trip is on local forest management and restoration. Transportation to the Klausbach Valley is provided by a chartered bus (departure at 8:30), followed by an easy hike and a ride on the local “hiking bus”. The excursion includes lunch on site, and the return transfer is again by chartered bus (arrival in Salzburg around 17:00). Although this excursion is not fully barrier-free (due to uneven paths), it is suitable for people without mountain hiking experience.

The price for this tour is ca. € 70.– (including lunch).

Ore of the Alps

This full-day excursion visits the former mining region of Bischofshofen/Hochkönig and is organized in collaboration with the UNESCO Global Geopark “Ore of the Alps”. The area around Bischofshofen has been one of the most significant sites of Bronze Age copper mining. The tour takes you to a show mine and includes a short walk along the slopes of the Hochkönig massif, as well as lunch at an alpine hut. Transportation is provided by a chartered bus (departure at 8:00, arrival in Salzburg around 17:00). The excursion fee includes transfers, the guided tour and lunch on site. Note: The field trip will take place only if the weather is nice. The trip is not wheelchair-accessible but is suitable for people without hiking experience.

Hohe Tauern National Park

This full-day excursion takes you to Hohe Tauern National Park, located in the mountains of Salzburg. The national park was established in the 1980s and 90s, though its origins date back to the early 20th century. The trip includes a visit to the National Park Centre in Mittersill and the Krimml Waterfalls, Austria’s highest waterfall. Transportation is provided by a chartered bus (departure at 8:30, arrival in Salzburg around 19:00). The excursion fee includes transfers, a guided tour of the centre, a walk (to the waterfalls) and lunch on site. This excursion is fully barrier-free.

The price for this tour is ca. € 75.– (including lunch).

Land, River, Salt
VI

This excursion explores the history of a river landscape between borders and shifting boundaries. The guided tour visits the beautiful historic town of Tittmoning and the nearby Salzach valley slopes with their evidence of river transport and changes in river dynamics. It also addresses current debates surrounding hydropower, flood management or restoring and preserving rivers. The excursion is organized in collaboration with the “Academy for Nature Conservation and Landscape Management” in Laufen (Germany) and it will include a 90-minute boat trip (with packed lunches) on the river Salzach. The excursion fee includes all transfers, the guided walk, the boat trip and lunch. All transfers will be provided by a chartered bus (departure at 8:30, arrival in Salzburg around 15:00). Please note: This excursion is not fully barrier-free due to uneven paths.

Living History Museum Großgmain

This open-air museum is located near the city of Salzburg and features a variety of historic buildings (mainly farmhouses) from rural areas of the Salzburg region and its surroundings. In addition to showcasing architectural history, several houses host exhibitions on various themes such as pre-modern rural working life, technology and regional development. At the museum, we will take part in a special guided tour focusing on aspects of environmental history. Lunch will be served on site. All transfers will be by public transport (departure at 9:00, arrival in Salzburg around 14:30). The excursion fee includes the guided tour and lunch. This excursion is fully barrier-free.

Ice Caves and Salt City

This full-day excursion combines a visit to the “Eisriesenwelt” ice caves in Werfen with a stop in the “Salt City” of Hallein on the way back. The “Eisriesenwelt” caves were opened to the public during the interwar period and have been easily accessible by bus and cable car since the 1950s. The guided tour through one of Europe’s largest ice caves offers spectacular views of the underground ice world at an altitude of approximately 1,500 meters. On the way back to Salzburg, the excursion stops in the town of Hallein, known for its salt mine. We will then visit the “Keltenmuseum”, which focuses on the Celtic era and the history of local salt mining. Transfer to the ice caves and Hallein is via public transport (departure at 8:30, arrival in Salzburg around 18:00). The excursion fee includes lunch on site, the cable car ticket, admissions, and the guided tour fees. Note: The cave is not wheelchair-accessible but is suitable for people without hiking experience.

Untersberg

The Untersberg is one of the “higher” mountains (i.e. 1.700-2.000 metres above sea level) closest to the city of Salzburg. The eastern peak of the Untersberg’s karst plateau, the “Geiereck”, offers great views of the Salzburg basin and the neighbouring Bavarian region of “Berchtesgadener Land”, yet it can be reached easily by cable car, which is well connected to the local public transport. The visit to the Untersberg will include a short ecological walk (not a hike!), an input on the history of the former alpine pastures (“Almen”) of the Untersberg and lunch on one of the alpine huts near the “Geiereck”. All transfers are via public transport (departure at 8:30, arrival in Salzburg around 14:00). The excursion fee includes the cable car ticket and lunch. Note: The field trip will take place only if the weather is nice. The trip is not wheelchair-accessible but is suitable for people without mountain hiking experience.

Additional note: For experienced hikers, an extended full-day option is available – weather permitting – which includes a visit to the Marktschellenberg ice cave and the descent on foot, i.e. an additional 4 to 5 hours tour. For those interested please contact georg.stoeger@plus.ac.at in advance.
